Located near Hartford on the east bank of the Connecticut River, South Windsor is a small town that has been inhabited by Europeans since the end of the 17th century. Since colonization, tobacco has been grown in the Connecticut River Valley and was formerly considered the lifeblood of the town. Here, in the first half of the 20th century, the industry peaked, only to decline again in the 1970s.

While South Windsor may not be a popular destination for tourists, Old Main Street has a remarkable collection of buildings spanning three centuries. Meanwhile, there’s a highly regarded escape room, Connecticut’s largest indoor entertainment centre, a craft brewery, and an insightful local museum all located inside the town borders.

Top 10 Best Things to Do in South Windsor (Connecticut) This Weekend in detail:

10.Hartford

The state capital’s culture and history make the short drive (only a few minutes away) on Interstate 84 worthwhile. This was the wealthiest city in the country in the decades following the Civil War, thanks to a burgeoning industrial sector driven by companies like Colt’s Patent Fire-Arms Manufacturing Company.

Mark Twain was one of the city’s many renowned citizens at the time. He composed his most well-known pieces in a magnificent neo-Gothic home that is now a first-rate writer’s museum.

The Wadsworth Atheneum, the nation’s first public museum, has amazing collections, so I would definitely make time for it. These cover European art from Caravaggio to Dalí, via Joseph Wright of Derby, Renoir, Monet, Max Ernst, and Joan Miró, as well as American decorative arts.

The Connecticut Science Centre is among the top interactive, high-tech museums for families. There’s a carousel in historic Bushnell Park that has been running since 1914.

9.Wickham Park

Situated somewhat south of Buckland Hills, this opulent 280-acre park offers family amenities in addition to a patchwork of little gardens. Give yourself as much time as you can to stroll and explore the various areas throughout the spring and summer. To just a few, there is the Wetlands Garden, English Garden, Italian Garden, Lotus Garden, Oriental Garden, and Arboretum.

Situated at the highest point in Wickham Park, the Cabin Garden offers a pleasing outlook west over the Hartford cityscape. For me, the aviary with its peafowl, pheasants, turkeys, turkey vultures, and ducks never gets old.

In total, there are three playgrounds, a nature centre, a playground next to the aviary, and facilities for tennis, volleyball, horseshoes, and disc golf. Wickham Park is privately owned and operates from April to October. Cars must pay a nominal entrance fee.

8.The Shoppes at Buckland Hills

A large mall with about 150 tenants, The Shoppes at Buckland Hills is a part of the same massive retail cluster. Classic retailers including Dick’s Sporting Goods, Gamestop, Foot Locker, JCPenney, Barnes & Noble, forever 21, H&M, and Victoria’s Secret are among them.

Numerous chains exist for food, both inside the mall and on the surrounding lots. Red Robin, Taco Bell, Five Guys, Olive Garden, Chili’s, and Friendly’s were all included in my total.

Buckland Hills 18 XD and IMAX by Cinemark are located directly across I-84. In the meanwhile, Hartford Funny Bone has a street-level entrance at the mall if you’re in the mood for some live comedy.

7.The Promenade Shops at Evergreen Walk

A massive retail area sits on a hill in the far south of the town, where South Windsor intersects with East Hartford and Manchester via Interstate 84. Buckland Hills is home to many restaurants, power centres, lifestyle centres, and malls.

The Promenade Shops at Evergreen Walk, an outdoor mall, is the most sophisticated of all, in my opinion. This focuses on eateries, high-end products, and niche businesses. Apple, Anthropologie, Williams Sonoma, Sephora, New Balance, LOFT, Old Navy, L.L. Bean, and Lovesac are just a handful of the stores located here.

You may find American food at Ted’s Montana Grill and Burtons Grill, as well as Shake Shack, Sakura Garden Japanese steakhouse, and Flatbread Co. earth oven pizza.

6.Nomads Adventure Quest

Nomads Adventure Quest is the state’s largest indoor entertainment centre and a blessing for families. A variety of activities are available, such as bumper cars, VR games, laser tag, indoor climbing, bowling, and black light mini-golf. Everything is set in a setting inspired by abandoned Mayan ruins.

There are two full-size basketball courts, a billiard room, an enormous bounce house area, and an arcade with eighty machines. Ten bounce houses and a tonne of other equipment make up this soft play area, where kids can wear themselves out. A complete bar for adults and a cafe are available to accompany all of this. I adore that the bar hosts live music on Saturday nights.

Nomads Adventure Quest charges a fee for each game played; there is no admission fee.

5.Topstone Golf Course

An excellent public 18-hole golf course is located in South Windsor. Topstone features beautiful fairways as good as you would expect from any country club, set on rolling, heavily forested terrain. Because the greens are so fast, this is a course best played by those with a light touch. The bunkers encircle nearly all of them, and the tees are oddly placed to keep you alert.

Two particularly noteworthy holes for me were the exceedingly tight fairway on the par-5 16th hole and the punishing dogleg on the par-4 18th hole. For 18 holes (walking), the green fees were $49 during the week and $52 on the weekends. The Three Seasons View Cafe is another place to stop for a bite to eat after a round.

4.Major Michael Donnelly Land Preserve

This preserve, like all of South Windsor’s public natural areas, is immaculately kept. It consists of a pine forest, fern-rich hardwood forest, meadow, and wetland next to the Podunk River. A vast system of boardwalks leads into the woodland and over the swamp. Meanwhile, the more developed parts of the preserve have recently cut lawns in the spring and summer.

In summer, you’ll come across a gazebo to get out of the sun. I saw several water birds and deer at the thoughtfully placed wildlife viewing spots along the paths. Major Michael Donnelly, a Gulf War veteran, is honored with the preserve’s name. He died in 2005 from complications from ALS, which were thought to be connected to the war.

3.Windsor Farms Historic District

You’ll find a variety of exquisite buildings erected over three centuries along Main Street, between I-291 in the south and Strong Road in the north. The charming historic town centre of South Windsor is included in the Windsor Farms Historic District. Sections of agriculture that were dominated by shade tobacco fields until the 1970s are scattered among these.

Built in the Greek Revival style in 1845, the First Congregational Church and the schoolhouse from the same year are two of the district’s most notable buildings. The oldest house in the district dates back to 1695. The Wood Memorial Library and Museum (1926) is located at 783. This location is something I’ll discuss a bit later in my list.

2.Nevers Park

Evers Park, which opened its doors in 2007, is a highly regarded neighborhood resource spanning about 140 acres and featuring more than two miles of walking and bicycling pathways. The park’s enormous “Boundless Playground,” which contains a tonne of equipment ideal for both babies and older kids, is one of its best features.

Nevers Park is a place to stroll for adults. I would take a picnic and stroll up to Jacob’s View, which is a great place to spend an hour.

Dog owners will value Bark Park’s meticulous attention to detail. This features water and clean-up stations, agility equipment, and sections dedicated to both small and large dogs. Try to visit this minuscule farmers’ market here on a Saturday morning, June through September.

1.Foster Family Farm

This charming farm in rural South Windsor transforms into a kid-friendly amusement park throughout the autumn season. Corn mazes, hayrides, a play area with a farm theme, pedal carts and a large number of farm animals to see are all available at Foster Family Farm.

With a combined area of eight acres and four miles of meandering routes, the two corn mazes are very impressive. The centerpiece maze is created with a fresh theme every year. This land has been farmed by the Foster Family since 1790. Additionally, the farm opens earlier in the season to sell Mother’s Day flowers.
